Search Engine Optimisation is the technical term for increasing traffic to your website, yet the majority of start-up businesses are not provided with the relevant information in regard to making it work for their company. The tips below only touch the surface but are a great way to start to make the most of your online presence
Content is King!
Search engines highly rank websites that people will like and benefit from. You need to ensure that your website provides valid up-to-date information for its visitors so that it is worth while for them. You also need to avoid duplicating content as this is something the search engines frown upon.
Avoid Flash and JavaScript.
Avoid creating your entire site in Flash navigation and/or JavaScript as this makes its impossible for the spiders that the search engines send out to find out what your site is about. Additionally avoid hidden text as if the search engines, which are becoming increasingly intelligent, spot any trickery you will be marked down.
Use Alt Tags & Title Tags
Alt Tags & Title Tags are a fantastic way to make your site more search engine friendly. You should also provide a Google site map as this will be directly related to Google’s own specification.
Find a partner
The technology involved in SEO is continually changing, therefore the way your website has been technically developed will also have a major impact and finding a good partner who is able to develop your website to make it search engine friendly should be a high priority. A large number of companies claim to be ‘SEO Experts’ making it very hard for businesses to establish which companies are the real deal. My best advice is to ask to see what results they have produced for their existing clients as this is the best way to assess their effectiveness.
Increase links to your website
To make your site more search engine friendly you need to encourage people to link to your website. But before you start getting back links you need to ensure that they are relevant. For example it is pointless getting a toy shop to link to your site if you sell garden furniture as the search engines will pick up on this and mark you against it.
